Why I love working at McDonald's

As many of you know, I work for my in-laws at a McDonald's office in our town. They own four stores in our area and we all keep very busy keeping them up and running.
Working for your in-laws  has it's perks; great hours, zero work drama, an easy-going environment - the list goes on.
There are certainly draw-backs to working with the public. Angry customers, constant ridicule on the McDonald's brand, again - the list goes on. But I feel like the good far out-weighs the bad.
I realized this today when I was working at Matt's store during the lunch hour.
I was working 'present' which means that I give customers their food & drink at the drive-thru window.
This is my favorite job because I get to work closely with the customers. You might be surprised to hear that since you all might have heard some insane stories about situations I've dealt with.
Every customer that comes through the drive-thru pulls up to my window and I always make it a point to smile and say "Hello, how are you?". This typically catches people off guard; some reply, some just stare at me, and others just smile, confused at what is going on.
Then I hand them their food, thank them, and give them another huge grin.

I do this every day.

Even if I'm in a terrible mood, I always make it a point to be pleasant to the customers.
Because they don't expect it.
And I always enjoy a smiling face when I'm buying something.

But all in all, I think the best part is the kids.
Because the kids - they're where it's at.
Adults have lots of negative things to say about working at McDonald's.

But kids...you know what they think when they see a McDonald's employee?
Awesome.
They think we're the bee's knees.
I always wave to kids that are in the back seats of cars when they're driving away. And they get so excited you'd think they just saw Batman.

That's the beauty of children. They don't judge; don't over think; don't stereotype.
They enjoy every single thing life has to offer.

People think it's just fast-food, it's not important. You're not doing anything meaningful.
But if I can make just one kid's day, I think I'm doing a hell of a lot more than people give us credit for.
That's what the McDonald's brand is all about, isn't it?
Making kids smile.

So the next time you head to a quick service restaurant, or any place of business for that matter, think like a child. And give that person in front of you a big 'ole smile.
We all appreciate it.

And here's one from me & Megh.

  1. True that sister, as I have learned from proudly wearing a McDonald's jacket to my Peds job everyday, they really do think it's the bees knees.
